MOUNT HOREB, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Wisconsin Department of Justice provided an update on the incident outside a Mount Horeb school on Wednesday, stating that the shooter was armed with a pellet gun.
The DOJ says around 11:00 AM, a citizen called 911 after seeing a suspicious person approaching Mount Horeb Middle School wearing a backpack and carrying what appeared to be a long gun.
Mount Horeb Police Department officers responded and located a subject that matched the description near the main entrance of the middle school.
Officers directed the suspect to drop the weapon but said they did not comply. The subject then pointed their weapon at the officers, and law enforcement discharged their firearms striking the subject.
The DOJ says lifesaving measures were initiated, but the suspect died at the scene.
Officers recovered the weapon, which was determined to be a Ruger .177 caliber pellet rifle.
No officers or witnesses were physically injured, and per agent policy, involved enforcement officers remain on administrative leave.
The Division of Criminal Investigation is conducting an investigation.
